 With Hubble (as well as Chandra and now many other space observatories) a “new universe” has opened – visible to one and all. We see the new “Columns of Hercules” guarding the passage into our Milky Way neighborhood. Beyond these we are now observing the birth and the death of stars, the creation of new heavy elements, the vast power of black holes and their possible role in the formation and evolution of galaxies.
